Fritz Darges

Fritz Darges ( Dülseberg , Altmark , Germany , 8 of February of 1913 - Celle , Lower Saxony , 25 of October of 2009 ) was a German military ( Obersturmbannführer ) awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross of the SS Waffen belonging to The 5th Division Panzergrenadier SS Wiking .

He was an aide to the SS of Adolf Hitler for a short period between 1943 and 1944 during World War II .

Biography

Fritz Darges was born in Dülseberg, Germany in 1913. After finishing his basic education, he trained as a foreign trade technician; For a time he was unemployed and joined the 1 of April of 1933, to the 20 years, to the SS with the number 72.222 being admitted in the Waffen SS to make race.

Race in the SS

In 1934 he conducted the training of officers in Junkerschule SS in Bad Tolz graduating as Untersturmführer (second lieutenant) in 1935. 1

In 1936, he was promoted to Obersturmführer and became a personal assistant to the Reichsleiter Martin Bormann until the beginning of World War II. In October of 1939 he was promoted to Hauptsturmführer and commanded companies in the divisions Das Fuhrer SS and Deutschland SS in the campaign of France.

At the start of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, Darges was attached to the 5th Panzergrenadier SS Wiking Division and fought in the Don Offensive in the Caucasus obtaining enough merit to receive the First Class Iron Cross in August 1942 .

Hitler aide

In January 1943 [ citation needed ] was called to Berlin, promoted to Obersturmbannführer and appointed by Himmler as adjutant of Hitler’s SS.

In May of that year, Hitler proposed to him in secret link 2 in marriage of convenience with his sister Gretl Braun in Obersalzberg , Darges rejected the request saying that he preferred to return to the Eastern Front to marry the sister of Eva Braun , a situation that probably did To be in bad foot with the Führer .

On July 18, 1944, Darges 3 also committed the imprudence of making disdainful comments at a conference in Wolfschanze in July of that year just two days before the Putsch of Stauffenberg , irritated Hitler, dismissed him and sent him back to the front Russian returning to the Wiking Division. It was replaced isofacto by Hermann Fegelein that if already had accepted the arrangement happening to comprise of the personal circle of Hitler.

Returning to the Russian front, Darges commanded a tank regiment of the Wiking Division standing out like a capable leader of the 5º Panzer Regiment in August of 1944. In January of 1945, the 5º Panzer regiment managed to break the front fighting to the Division Nº 41 of Soviet infantry pocketing important summit forces and accrediting the destruction of 30 tanks in a single battle on the front of the Vistula. 4

Darges was decorated with one of the last Knight Crosses .

He was detained with members of his division by the Americans in May 1945. There is no record of trial, sentencing and release.

Final life

After the war he lost the trail of Darges knowing that he married and earned his living as an Opel car dealer in Celle , Lower Saxony .

In 2000, in old age, gave a short interview for the documentary Hitler Krieg im Osten , in which he made it clear that he was a convinced Nazi and that he regarded Hitler as a great military strategist. 5Darges stated that he left some handwritten memoirs 6 in which he is expected to be published after his death. Darges died at the age of 96 in Celle, Lower Saxony.
