Biography

Bachmayer was born in Fridolfing (formerly Bayern), in the district of Traunstein in Bavaria in 1913. In his youth he worked as a carpenter . He joined the SS and reached the rank of Hauptsturmführer in the Totenkopf-Infanterie-Regiment No. 1, belonging to the Division SS Totenkopf in Bavaria. These divisions SS were created for the custody of the fields KZ and therefore, Bachmayer was assigned in 1940 like person in charge of the preventive prison in Mauthausen, under the supervision of Franz Ziereis , commander of Mauthausen.

When the construction of the Ebensee satellite camp , one of the largest of the 101 Austrian forced labor camps, was approved, it was a gigantic natural quarry near the Seeberg mountains. The Nazis planned to hide in that sector the facilities of Peenemunde, where V-2 rockets were being tested. The task was to dig and drill the slopes of a quarry to build large tunnels that would house such facilities. The task would be carried out with slave labor supplied by the Mauthausen camp. 1

The field went into operation in 1943 and Zieries sent Bachmayer as commander of that field. Georg Bachmayer gained a sad fame for his extreme cruelty and sadism with the prisoners-slaves. Bachmayer was in the habit of hanging the prisoners by his thumbs and if they were released, Bachmayer would release his mastiffs to kill them. Those who fell under his gaze unfailingly were executed.

Bachmayer was replaced in 1944 by Otto Riemer and redetinado to Mauthausen. In May 1945, during the collapse of Nazism, Bahcmayer fled the countryside with his wife and children and took refuge in a country house in the Tyrol, pretending to be a Tyrolean. It was located by US forces on May 8, 1945 and was cornered, murdered his family and then committed suicide.
