Jean Leonetti

Jean Leonetti is a French politician born on9 July 1948In Marseille ( Bouches-du-Rhône ). Former Vice-President of the Radical Party 1 then of the UMP , current member of the Republicans , he has been mayor of Antibes since 1995 and deputy of Alpes-Maritimes since 1997 2 . He is best known for his name given to the Leonetti law of 22 April 2005 on the rights of the sick and the end of life . He was also Minister for European Affairs of the29 Jun 2011 To May 10 , 2012.

Biography

Doctor cardiologist training still in office, Jean Leonetti is mayor of the city of Antibes from 1995 ( 4 th order). He becomes a member of the 7 th district of Alpes-Maritimes during the 1997 legislative elections , garnering the second round 72.96% of votes cast in a duel with the candidate of the National Front Robert Crépin (27.04%) 3 . He was re-elected in the 7 th district of Alpes-Maritimes in the first round during the 2002 legislative with 53.1% 4 , of the 2007 legislative elections with 63.99% of the vote 5 , and legislative in 2012 with 51,10 % 6 .

It is one of the vice presidents UMP group in the National Assembly during the XIII th legislature of the Fifth Republic 7 . He was reappointed to the position on 26 June 2012, for the XIV th legislature , with eight other members 8 . Of the twelve deputies of the Radical Party of Valois , he is one of the seven who sit in the UMP group rather than in the group of the Union of Democrats and Independents chaired by Jean-Louis Borloo .

A long time deputy president of the Radical Party, he resigns from this position on July 4, 2012, no longer in agreement with the line of the party that claims autonomy from the UMP 9 , 10 . Jean Leonetti is indeed in favor of maintaining the PR in the UMP 9 . He remains a member of the Radical Party 9 .

From spring 2010 until June 2011, he chaired the Fédération hospitalière de France .

On June 29, 2011, he was appointed Minister for European Affairs , with the Minister of State, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs , in the third Francois Fillon government . He was replaced in the National Assembly by his deputy Michel Rossi .

On 20 August 2012, he announced that he supported François Fillon at the congress for the presidency of the UMP 11 . Moreover, it deposits with other personalities the policy statement of the movement modern and humanist France 12 . On February 3, 2013, he was appointed vice-president of the UMP (under the “movements”) and member of the commission of revision of the statutes of the party 13 .

In 2014, at the Congress for the presidency of the UMP following the resignation of Jean-Francois Cope, he argues Bruno Le Maire to the party presidency 14 .

He supports Alain Juppé for the presidential primary of the Republicans of 2016 15 .

Parliamentary work

Jean Leonetti, who is very involved in ethical issues , particularly medical issues, chaired the “Parliamentary Mission on End of Life Support” in 2004, which led to the drafting of a Léonetti 1 report on 30 June 2004 This report contains, among other things, the needs of health professionals and the population regarding the end of life.

This first report leads to the ” Law on the rights of the sick and the end of life ” n ° 2005-370 ofwhich he was the rapporteur in Parliament 16 . This mission was entrusted to him by President Jacques Chirac and the Raffarin government following the Vincent Humbert case of 2003.

On March 5, 2003, he initiated a proposal, not discussed at the time, to recognize “the positive work of all our citizens who lived in Algeria during the French presence period” co-signed by 107 other MPs 17.

In 2008, following the Chantal Sébire affair , Jean Léonetti drafted a second report to evaluate the law of 22 April 2005.
