Reception

After its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015, the film was received with great acclaim by critics. In the critique for The Guardian , Peter Bradshaw says: “This amazing debut film is a horror film of extraordinary focus and bravery, to which I give it: ★★★★★ (about 5)” 4 On the other hand Eric Kohn Indiewire says: “The terrifying ‘Son of Saul’ does not resemble any Holocaust thriller you’ve ever seen. Develop a powerful song from the sheer, devastating nature of your events while resisting the slightest exaggeration. ” 5 In the Hollywood Reporter’s critique by Boyd van Hoeij: “Absolutely uncomfortable to see, but assembled in a surprising and safe way, the film is a powerful listening and visual experience.” 6 From Variety , Justin Chang writes: “Hungarian director Laszlo Nemes makes a powerful debut with this bleak and unshakeable drama about the Holocaust, a masterful exercise in narrative deprivation and sensory overload that reshapes family horrors in daringly existential terms. ” 7 From Fotogramas, Philipp Engel says: “Nemes achieves the fairest of balances: an unusual, neutral, exact, real look, without sentimentality, nor sensationalism impacts globally by its sobriety, its rigor, its formal precision, by prodigious plans” . 8 From Mexico, Leonardo García Tsao from Diario La Jornada says: “The interesting thing about the formal resolution of the debutant Nemes is how he used the camera in his hand, so terrible actions are not shown unless they are suggested, under a sinister soundtrack composed of Screams, blows and other disturbing sounds. ” 9 In Rotten Tomatoes , the film has a 96% approval rating based on 151 critics’ comments , averaging 8.7 out of 10. 10 In Metacritic , the film has received an average score of 89 out of 100 based on 39 critics, indicating “universal acclaim”. eleven

Awards and nominations

Winner of the Oscar 2016 award for best non-English film.
